Darnell Hill Age: 39 Paroling to: Oakland, California
Why did you join the T.R.U.S.T.? I joined the T.R.U.S.T. to continue my efforts as a productive member of my prison and societal community.
What does being a T.R.U.S.T. Fellow mean to you? Being a T.R.U.S.T. Fellow gives me the skills to ethically and sociologically serve and lead family, friends, and community with integrity.
Since coming to prison, what have you accomplished? Sociologically: I embraced the imperative need to internalize the effects of my crime on family, friends, and community. Emotionally: I am aware of my responsibilities, commitment and obligation to restore my value as a productive citizen. Physically: I have established a healthy lifestyle: crime-free, drug/alcohol-free, a balanced diet; and productive relationships.
What are some of your hobbies and interests? Hobbies: Art; Poetry; Exercise; reading; and motorcycle riding. Interests: camping; flying a plane and speed boating.
What programs are you involved with other than the T.R.U.S.T.? Patten University graduate with an A.A. Degree. Ministry Course. Studying sociology. Project Choice. S.Q.U.I.R.e.S. and R.E.A.L. Choices working with youth.
What kind of work do you do with the “inside” and/or “outside” communities? I am a motivating force within adolescent lives, inspiring change from criminal behavior and motivating respect for self, family, friends, and community. Through T.R.U.S.T., S.Q.U.I.R.E.S. and R.E.A.L. Choices, I help youth to embrace their self-worth.
How do you live up to the T.R.U.S.T. value system? How do you promote the ideals of the T.R.U.S.T. outside the workshops? In order for me to keep the T.R.U.S.T., I must be the T.R.U.S.T.. I teach by learning from my mistakes, actively taking responsibility for my actions. I utilize what I have learned to help others. I sociologically embrace my accountability to family and community while in life training.
What do you want to do after you parole? I will continue to work with troubled youth and attend and promote nonviolent rallies for safer communities.
What are your long-term goals? To own and fully establish a programmed youth center with counseling departments for parents and their teens. To build and own my own home and a transitional house for young adults released from prison. I also would love to learn to fly an airplane or at least parachute out of one.
Personal message to the outside community: Watch your thoughts because they become your words. Watch your words because they become your actions. Watch your actions because they become your habits. Watch your habits because they become your behavior. Watch your behavior because it becomes your destiny.
