Nickname:
Chu
Age: 44
Paroling to: Los Angeles
Family: My wife, Carol, and god-daughters Cloie and Jayda.

Why did you join the T.R.U.S.T.?
1. To gain information, experiences, resources, and contacts to establish my own non-profit. 2. To help cats going home teach their kids differently so they don’t die young.

What does being a T.R.U.S.T. Fellow mean to you?
Being a role model, mentor, and elder to others, while I continuously pursue my own growth in the areas essential to my well-being & goals in life.

Since coming to prison, what have you accomplished?
I’ve become more self-reliant, determined and focused in my thoughts and deeds. I’ve grown up emotionally and severed ties to “old” friends that are still involved in illegal activities. I’ve learned to be still and be alone, though I’m surrounded by others, and be comfortable with myself.

What are some of your hobbies and interests?
Writing; Poetry; reading history and developmental literature; playing chess; studying real estate and business; mentoring; and playing sports.

What programs are you involved with other than the T.R.U.S.T.?
Bachelor’s degree program through Ohio State University.
Keepin’ It Real (Peer mentoring).
S.Q.U.I.R.E.S. (Juvenile delinquency prevention).
Project Choice (Peer Mentoring)

What kind of work do you do with the “inside” and/or “outside” communities?
First and foremost, I set positive examples by continuing to educate and develop myself. In the process, I promote positive achievement in and out. I meet with community leaders, citizens, and teachers to brainstorm about violence reduction techniques. I fundraise for local schools, programs and causes.

How do you live up to the T.R.U.S.T. value system? How do you promote the ideals of the T.R.U.S.T. outside the workshops?
I promote self development, upliftment, and collective effort to everyone I communicate with. I send my grades to younger family members.

What do you want to do after you parole?
Establish the following: 1. myself in the family and community 2. having my own community-based non-profit organizations.

What are your long-term goals?
I’d like to have a centrally-located non-profit dealing with manhood and womanhood training, with a small farm component outside the city to teach practical life skills.

Personal message to the outside community:
Don’t focus on the problems plaguing our communities and despair. Roll up your sleeves, take a youngster under your wing, and push for a better community every single day. Today’s youngsters are tomorrow’s leaders, so teach them well through your example.
