Age:
29
Paroling to: San Joaquin County
Family: Mother Juanita. Brothers Andrew, 24, and Victor, 15. Daughter Desiree, 13. Niece Haley 2.

Why did you join the T.R.U.S.T.?
To become an asset to my community. The T.R.U.S.T. promotes positive community development, and I would like to be a part of that.

What does being a T.R.U.S.T. Fellow mean to you?
It means that I’m surrounded by positive, like-minded people.

Since coming to prison, what have you accomplished?
I was just a child when I came to prison, so first I had to grow up. I’ve maintained a great relationship with my daughter. I stopped blaming other people or circumstances for my problems. I learned to write.

What are some of your hobbies and interests?
I am a writer, guitar player, and block printer, although not always in that order.

What programs are you involved with other than the T.R.U.S.T.?
I work with young men as a member of S.Q.U.I.R.E.S., a youth diversion program. I’m currently 9 credits shy of my A.A. Degree. I’m also in the Arts and Corrections program and a member of the Catholic Choir.

What kind of work do you do with the “inside” and/or “outside” communities?
In S.Q.U.I.R.E.S. we work with young men who are in juvenile hall, camps, and many that are headed to those places. We share our experiences with them, and try to educate them on the dangers of gangs and drugs by communicating, not yelling.

How do you live up to the T.R.U.S.T. value system? How do you promote the ideals of the T.R.U.S.T. outside the workshops?
I work hard in my job. I say hello to people I don’t know. I’m punctual (most of the time). I finish what I start. I encourage people in here, and outside, to seek higher education.

What do you want to do after you parole?
Make “sand angels” with my daughter at dawn on a beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Roast hot dogs on sticks on that same beach with the rest of my family. Fall in love. Write a song about freedom. Cry. Laugh. Sign. Remember.

What are your long-term goals?
I hope to work with at-risk youth in my community, not only by sharing my experiences with them, but also helping them to learn to appreciate art and music.

Personal message to the outside community:
Be creative.
